Whether you are a couple facing male fertility challenges or an unmarried woman wishing to have your own child, modern science now makes parenthood possible through the use of donor sperm. At Spermia, we offer a broad selection of carefully screened donors to meet diverse needs. Our donors are healthy young men who undergo thorough physical, mental, and personality evaluations.
With many years of experience, at Spermia we are proud to have supported countless families in achieving their dream of having a child. Through scientific knowledge and personalized counseling, we provide fertility solutions that meet today’s expectations.
Donor Selection with Care and Expertise
Choosing a donor is a personal journey that calls for expert guidance and professionalism. This choice will shape not only the lives of those receiving the donor sample, but also the life of the child to come.
At Spermia, we approach donor selection with individualized care. Each person or couple begins by sharing their preferences — not only regarding physical characteristics, but also the personality traits and lifestyle values they hope to see reflected.
These details allow our team to identify the donor profiles that best align with each one’s vision. While a complete, transparent overview of every donor is offered — from appearance to personality and lifestyle, the final choice is made through direct communication with our Scientific Director.
At Spermia, we blend professionalism with genuine care, ensuring every decision is made with confidence, understanding, and complete clarity.
Spermia’s Quality Assurance
Spermia operates under a State License issued by Hellenic Authority for Medically Assisted Reproduction (eaiya.gov.gr), Government Gazette B 2350/2017, B 234/2023, and has a license to transport samples within the European Union (EU TE Code GR009402). It complies with the specifications of Greek legislation and the World Health Organization (WHO) for the freezing, cryopreservation and distribution of frozen sperm.
The quality of our services is guaranteed by ISO 15224, which is the certification of laboratories participation in the SIGA-ESHRE External Quality Control System since 1998.
Spermia’s highly trained staff is there to help you every step of the way in choosing the right donor for you.
Principles governing sperm donation
In order to ensure high standards of service, sperm donation is governed by certain rules, namely:
- The use of fresh donor sperm is prohibited. For this reason, frozen samples are always used.
- The use of sperm from more than one donor during a treatment cycle is prohibited.
- The maximum number of children that may be born from the sperm of the same donor depends on the rules and regulations of each country.
- The laboratory operates with state-of-the-art equipment, highly trained scientists and rigorous quality control procedures.
Non-ID Release and ID Release Sperm Donor
The legal status regarding ID-release sperm donors varies significantly from country to country. Some countries only allow anonymous donation, while in others it is mandatory for donors to be identified. In this case, children conceived by donors have the legal right to know the identity of their donor once they reach a certain age (usually 18) and, if the donor agrees, to contact them.
Sperm donation in Greece is anonymous. Therefore, the donor’s details are not disclosed to the recipients. Similarly, the details of the couple receiving the donor sample, as well as the child or children born by this process, are not disclosed to the donor of the genetic material. Recently, the legal framework in Greece has changed, allowing the use of ID-release donors and giving the opportunity to the recipients to decide on what suits their needs best.
Donor medical information
The detailed laboratory testing includes:
- Semen analysis (macroscopic and microscopic examination including sperm count, round cell count and differentiation, assessment of sperm motility, vitality and morphology)
- Viability testing after thawing
- Complete microbiological testing including: aerobic and anaerobic culture for common microbes, testing for Chlamydia trachomatis, Mycoplasma hominis, Mycoplasma genitalium, Ureaplasma urealyticum, Ureaplasma parvum, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Herpes simplex 1, Herpes simplex 2,Trichomonas vaginalis, Haemophilus ducreyi, Treponema pallidum, Candida albicans, Gardnerella vaginalis, Group B Streptococcus using the PCR method
- Checking sperm DNA fragmentation using flow cytometry, with the Evenson method, which is an objective method widely used in the literature
- Blood type / Rh
- Testing for HIV (anti-HIV I/II), hepatitis B (HBsAg), hepatitis C (anti-HCV), serological testing for treponema (RPR/VDRL) and molecular testing for HIV, HBV, HCV. Testing for antibodies against T-lymphotropic viruses (HTLV-1 and 2)
- Karyotype
- Testing for thalassemia types α, β, and δβ using molecular techniques
- Screening for sickle cell anemia, using molecular techniques
- Testing for cystic fibrosis (sequencing covering ≥99% of pathological nucleotide variants and including testing for deletions and duplications in the CFTR gene)
- Screening for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) in the SMN1/2 gene
- Testing for non-syndromic deafness (connexin gene, GJB2), screening for the most common pathological variant c.35delG.
Additional testing
At Spermia, we perform all tests required by Greek law and also offer the option to screen for a wide range of additional genetic conditions. Always at the forefront of innovation in our field, we now provide gene matching using both your own genetic material and that of the egg donor.
